Dave Newhouse: Long way from 'Wrong Way"
Thu, 03 Jul 2008 19:33:34 GMT

Florence Coustier's 15 minutes of fame adds up to one hour.

That's because Coustier had separate encounters with four iconic pilots - Charles Lindbergh, Howard Hughes, Amelia Earhart, and Douglas ''Wrong Way'' Corrigan.

So four times 15 minutes makes it one hour. That's quite a celebrity list, though, for this 92-year-old Alameda resident to have acquired in one lifetime.

All four encounters occurred at Roosevelt Field on Long Island, New York. Of the four, Coustier's strongest memory was sitting on Corrigan's lap two days before his infamous flight.

Island Fever
Thu, 03 Jul 2008 19:32:33 GMT
ALAMEDA: The Nearest Island Escape "When tiki was invented by Don the Beachcomber in the 1930s, the drinks were revolutionary." says Martin Cate, cocktail mastermind and co-owner of Alameda's Forbidden Island Lounge (1304 Lincoln Avenue, Alameda, 510-749-0332). "He was doing things with spices and rare liqueurs unheard of at the time, making unusual and dynamic flavor combinations during what was a dark age of the cocktail. He kicked off a drink fad that lasted 40 years. I don't think the mojito phase will last that long." Unlike most tiki bartenders, Cate is as serious about his drinks as are any of the top mixologists in San Francisco, and he's the only one from the tiki world you will ever see at the educational spirits tastings and distillery tours sponsored by the local bartenders' guild. While Forbidden Island has all the familiar trappings of a tiki trap, the cocktails are the best of their kind in the country. And it's only a short trip on the ferry to get there.

End of an era: Celera moves its HQ to California
Thu, 03 Jul 2008 19:30:24 GMT

Celera now lists its Alameda, Calif., location as its corporate headquarters on its Web site; however, Speechly said about 30 employees will continue to work in Rockville. According to Speechly, the firm's growth in California can be attributed to the company's acquisition of two California companies, Berkley Heart Lab and Atria Genetics Inc., within the last year, as well as to the business's move away from genomics.

According to the 2008 State Technology and Science Index released last month by economic think tank the Milken Institute, Maryland ranks No. 2 nationwide for excellence in science and technology, bumping No. 4 California from its 2007 second-place slot.

Connolly said that even though Celera no longer paves the way for genomics research in the country, its contributions to the Maryland biotechnology industry were still significant.

State could require permits for Suisun Bay ship cleaning
Thu, 03 Jul 2008 19:29:20 GMT

State regulators became involved after reading Times reports in August that hull cleaning was occurring in Richmond without notice to state and local authorities and a later report that government documents show the work left metals and lead paint in the Bay.

Now, new documents show that Maritime Administration officials ignored state requests to observe the cleaning last month of another ship in Alameda.

No final regional water board decision has been made on whether to regulate the hull cleanings. Formal action would require a 30-day comment period preceding a public hearing and a vote of the board's members. The board is one of eight such bodies that regulate water quality and usage in California

How bloggers blocked Alameda's bike ban
Thu, 03 Jul 2008 03:50:14 GMT

Whatever the intentions, the bloggers lit up the sky and City offices started getting emails. Not exactly a blizzard, according to Ms. Goldman, who estimated about 40 emails and other, assorted communication. But enough to get peoples' attention.

Last night, the City Council stepped back from the brink of madness and changed the ordinance language back to a more reasonable no-skateboarding-where-posted approach.

"It's an interesting time we live in with these blogs," said Ms. Goldman. "They can generate a lot of mail. I think the language (was changed back) based on that input."

Today there was more blogging about who first sounded the alarm. But the details and history don't change the fact that citizens used the bandwaves to get some action. Is that this "citizen journalism" thing? Community journalism? Or just civic engagement via technology?

A Testy and Impatient Mayor Reverses Direction on Bike Ban
Thu, 03 Jul 2008 03:25:07 GMT

Spicing up sausages / Bay Area retailers are adding lavender, curry...
Wed, 02 Jul 2008 23:12:00 GMT

Golden Gate Market in San Francisco's Ferry Building Marketplace offers about two dozen different house-made fresh sausages at all times, including a garlicky venison link, a wild boar-beer sausage and some low-sodium choices. Baron's Meat & Poultry in Alameda makes 15 to 18 different types.

All of these premium producers boast about the high quality of the meat they use, and the absence of preservatives. They've all heard the old joke about sausages and laws - two things you don't want to see being made - and take pains to describe their own fastidious methods.

In the Parks: A midsummer night dream
Wed, 02 Jul 2008 23:09:53 GMT

I had found some gnarly looking brown things in a pile next to a house that we lived at in the Oakland hills. The house we were renting at the time had a large orchard and a lot of open space. The house was located just south of Joaquin Miller Park. A few years later, the Oakland Mormon Temple was built two blocks above where we lived.

It was common for us to sit on the front porch of our house on Lincoln Avenue and look out to the southwest. You could see for miles, across the Bay to the peninsula and beyond - Alameda, San Mateo and even Redwood City.

Measure A Critics Trot Out Same Old Tired Arguments
Tue, 01 Jul 2008 21:02:23 GMT

Alameda Magazine has published a new article on the Measure A debate. Unfortunately, the author chose to bring up the old red-herring accusations of "racism" leveled by Measure A critics. And HOMES trots out the same worn-out, inaccurate phrases about how Measure A prevents affordable housing from being built and so on.

Passage of parcel tax restores funds to sports at Alameda public schools
Mon, 30 Jun 2008 18:29:58 GMT

ALL THE VOTES ARE IN, and Measure H - placed before Alameda voters in the June 3 primary - looks to have passed after all. Reportedly 115 votes short of the two-thirds majority needed for passage in the days after the election, absentee and provisional ballots that had yet to be counted at the time now have put the measure over the top by the barest of margins.

Passage of this parcel tax measure is good news for the Alameda Unified School District. High school sports programs were among the items on the chopping block when statewide budget cuts led to an expected $4.5 million shortfall in district funds.

Though sports programs at Alameda and Encinal high schools are saved for the time being, it still is unfortunate that the school district had no other choice but to place this measure before the voters. Ultimately, the voters made the right choice in passing this measure (which, in fairness, should only require a simple majority for passage). There also are costs to a community for NOT having programs such as high school sports. Still, while $120 per year is not a princely sum, parcel taxes already are a huge hit on the household budgets of newer homeowners.
